Y'all remember those chibi fox OCs I drew a while back, Walter and Roxy? No? Well, I've been drawing satirical one-off comics featuring them. Right now, I've only been uploading them to my Instagram (@carnelianfox_jp), but maybe I'll bring them here. Definitely check out my page! I'll link the comic pages below for all the people who want to look now.
So those are on there now. A lot of artists from DeviantArt are doubling up on Instagram, if not being more active there entirely. A lot of people in the general populace say that Instagram is almost as toxic as Twitter, but it's really not if you plug yourself into the right places. It depends on the tags and people you follow. In short, I wouldn't shy away from IG just because it's one of the more mainstream social media platforms. You have a much better balance of freedom and control of your feed than other platforms provide. I want to wish everyone a happy New Year because I'm calling it early!
By now, we've all had plenty of time to learn how to use the altered interface. It's definitely sleeker, but a few people I talked to about it said they didn't like it because it felt like everything had to be relearned. I know I don't use DA too much anymore, but I have had some review ideas on the brain that I think would make great journals. To start off, for better or worse, I'm going to review deviantart, it's new interface and whether or not it's actually useful. Please note I'm only doing this for the desktop interface, not the mobile one.
Now, most everyone who follows me and who I follow were around for the the lime green motif with simplistic and admittedly limited controls. This is mostly going to be my own experience with the interface, and I'll even be performing the basic functions of searching and browsing as I write.
First things first, I don't know about you, but I usually go straight to my watches to see what's new and what appeals to me. So you go to your watches on the top bar, off to the left. Handy shortcut. Then, instead of having the different categories for groups, individuals, journals, etc on the side, it's on the top. It gets better, since the options for the different categories follow along as you scroll, and with no lag. It sounds great. However, the part about it that isn't so user friendly is that the font is very simple, ordinary and it isn't even bolded or italicized to stand out as clickable options. You may not even notice or use the options bar and just scroll through your watches. By this point, you can only see the most recent handful, so you need to click view all. If you move your mouse far enough to the right, "view all" will fade into being. It's a very cool effect that makes you think "well that's neat", but aside from being stylistic, I can't fathom why view all has to pop up instead of just being there.
Now let's go and talk about the homepage. For the most part, it's similar to how your watches work in terms of how it functions. Bonus: you don't have to go looking for where view all will pop up because it's already there. Now, instead of just seeing the latest upload or what's popular on any given day, the first things you see on the homepage will be based on things you've added to your favorites and things you've searched in the past. It's handy and highly likely to find you something you like. You can even go to your watches from the homepage without even using the top bar. It seems redundant, but it's convenient. It does make it a little tougher to try something new, like if you got into a new fandom recently and want to explore the fan art. Thankfully, the option to explore different media is also on the home page and there to help represent the added diversity to your interests.
Notes. The way it looks has changed entirely, but little has changed functionally. If anything, there's just a little more scrolling involved, but it's not bad.
The profile page. If you liked stamps, they don't assimilate well into this new format. You used to be able to fit four on a line in your about section just be pasting in the thumbnail. Right now, I'm not even sure that's possible anymore. I've put some stamps on my profile page, but it was a little more tedious than I anticipated (mostly because I was trying to do the old way on a new system). Aesthetically, the profile layout is much less clunky, it's sleeker and the artwork on a person's page really stands out. Another little perk is that your stash is one step In my opinion, though, I saved the best for last. I'm happiest about the profile because they fixed some of the stupidest hangups there were. You know how, on the old interface, you could disable comments on every post, but not your profile page? Well, now you can disable the comments section on your profile page! Less spam, less headaches.
In all, if you're a veteran DA user by any stretch of time, there's a bit of a learning curve and some things will seem tedious, but it's not bad. New users could learn to use it pretty quickly. Other reviews from me will be a lot less wishy-washy.
